More about ArtCon

This comprehensive bibliography of academic papers and other scholarly works on artificial consciousness focuses on English language works published in recent decades in academic journals, books and other scholarly outlets. The database is based mainly on relevant searches in OpenAlexPhilPapers, and ResearchGate. Our goal is to offer a useful, freely available bibliographical tool with search functionality to researchers working in the interdisciplinary field of machine consciousness, AI and philosophy of mind.

The database runs on Zotero. You can join the ArtCon group and start using the entire database directly in your Zotero library

A map of our bibliography

Navigate through our database using a unique map of topical relations.

We have worked with Moritz Kriegleder (University of Vienna) and Max Noichl (Utrecht University) who have created an experimental map based on our bibliographical database with OpenAlex Mapper (see also Noichl, M., Loettgers, A., Knuuttila, T. (2025). Philosophy at Scale: Introducing OpenAlex Mapper. Working Paper).

The map tracks the topical relations between the books and papers in our bibliography. Each entry’s position in this map is determined by an analysis of the expressions included in its title and abstract.

As a result, the map offers a fresh look on the rapidly developing field of artificial consciousness and helps researchers easily find new resources relevant to topics they are working on.

Feedback welcome!

The database has currently over 600 entries and we aim to update it regularly. As the database is still work-in-progress, we welcome your help.

We welcome your:

  • Recommendations of papers and books on this topic (artificial consciousness and conscious AI) that we have missed – please do not hesitate to share with us your own relevant work
  • Suggestions concerning how to make the bibliographical database more useful or user-friendly
