The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) attaining consciousness has long intrigued scientists, philosophers, and the public. This paper explores the intersection of explainable AI (XAI) and machine consciousness by distinguishing between empirical advancements, speculative projections, and their portrayals in science fiction. As AI grows increasingly complex and integrated into human contexts, questions of subjective experience, intentionality, and agency become more pressing. The role of explainability is central-not merely as a technical solution for transparency but as a philosophical bridge for understanding emergent behaviors and potential signs of consciousness. This paper delves into the neuroscience of consciousness, philosophical debates on qualia and intentionality, and how XAI might help us probe, understand, and responsibly manage increasingly autonomous AI systems. The narrative culminates in assessing what consciousness in AI might mean for humanity, ethics, and our conception of intelligence.
